Description

The 058 133 517 purge valve is an ECU-controlled component in the evaporative-emissions system. It regulates the flow of stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the engine, where the vapors are burned during normal operation.

By opening and closing at the correct time, the valve helps the engine management system control fuel vapor recovery and monitor the EVAP system for leaks. A failed valve can interrupt vapor flow, trigger a check-engine light, and contribute to driveability concerns.

Why the 058 133 517 Purge Valve Matters

Fuel vapors naturally develop inside the fuel tank. Rather than releasing them into the atmosphere, the EVAP system stores these vapors in a charcoal canister. The engine control unit then commands the valve to open when operating conditions allow the engine to burn the vapors.

The 058 133 517 purge valve also supports EVAP self-testing. During certain diagnostic routines, the valve must close so the control unit can assess whether the system holds pressure or vacuum as intended. Correct valve operation helps maintain emissions-system performance and accurate fault monitoring.

Signs Your Purge Valve Needs Replacing

A faulty valve may cause one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Check-engine light with EVAP-related diagnostic trouble codes.

  • Diagnostic trouble code P0441, which may indicate an incorrect purge-flow condition.

  • Rough idle or inconsistent engine operation.

  • Hard starting after refueling.

  • Fuel-vapor odor near the vehicle.

  • Failed emissions-system readiness or inspection testing.

  • Clicking, sticking, or no response during commanded diagnostic testing.

Always diagnose the EVAP system fully before replacing components, as damaged hoses, wiring faults, or a defective charcoal canister can produce similar codes.
