The automatic transmission filter is essential to maintaining smooth shifting and protecting your transmission from premature wear. Its job is to trap contaminants and prevent them from circulating through the hydraulic system, where they could lower pressure, damage seals, or cause shifting issues.
A clogged or worn filter can result in low hydraulic pressure, leading to erratic shifting or even transmission failure. Replacing the filter at recommended service intervals ensures that your transmission fluid remains clean and that your transmission continues to perform reliably.
When replacing the filter, it is also recommended to replace the transmission pan gasket to prevent leaks and refill with the correct transmission fluid. Note that 4-speed transmissions use a different fluid than 5-speed units—always consult your owner’s manual for proper specifications.
