Description

The 1C0 906 517A purge valve is an ECU-controlled EVAP-system solenoid that manages fuel-vapor flow between the charcoal canister and engine intake. It opens when commanded by the engine control unit, allowing stored vapors to enter the engine and burn during normal combustion.

This process reduces evaporative emissions while supporting the proper operation of the fuel-vapor recovery system. A malfunctioning valve can restrict vapor flow, trigger a check-engine light, and lead to engine-performance or emissions-system concerns.

Why the 1C0 906 517A Purge Valve Matters

Fuel vapors develop naturally inside the fuel tank. The EVAP system captures those vapors in a charcoal canister rather than allowing them to escape into the atmosphere. When engine operating conditions are suitable, the ECU energizes the purge valve and meters the vapors into the intake system.

The valve also contributes to EVAP diagnostic testing. It must respond correctly during self-tests so the ECU can detect unwanted vapor-system leaks or purge-flow faults. Replacing a faulty valve helps restore controlled vapor flow and helps keep the charcoal canister from becoming contaminated with excessive fuel vapor.

Signs Your Purge Valve Needs Replacing

Inspect and diagnose the EVAP system if you experience:

  • Check-engine light with EVAP-related diagnostic trouble codes.

  • Rough idle, hesitation, or inconsistent engine response.

  • Hard starting after refueling.

  • Fuel-vapor odor around the vehicle.

  • Failed emissions readiness testing.

  • Clicking, sticking, or no response during diagnostic activation.

  • Restricted or incorrect purge-flow faults.

A damaged vacuum hose, electrical connector, charcoal canister, or fuel-cap seal can produce similar symptoms. Test the complete system before replacing parts.
